Yoga was originated in ancient India, only yogis practiced yoga in those days, possibly due to lack of mass education and cast systems that divided general public into social hierarchy. Many consider yoga was in practice around 3000 BC, Buddha studied and practiced yoga & meditation. He achieved enlightenment when he was 35 years old. It was Patanjali who lived in second century wrote a text called the Yoga Sutra, an attempt to standardize and define the yoga practice.

Yoga was introduced to west during 19th Century, in many universities yoga was studied as part of eastern studies. There are many people who made it possible to popularize yoga in west, prominent among are Maharishi Mahesh, Yoga Guru Swami Sivananda. Sivananda opened many yoga schools in US and Europe.
